The Templar Final Stand: 4 Actions for Modern Leadership
Part Third describes the
battles, the Kings, and hardships the Knights Templars endured from 1099 to
1291. We cannot give the details of two centuries here but below are some
important events that will help you better understand Macoy’s claims and
actions you can take today.
·
The Refusal
at Tyre: After being
released by Saladin, King Guy and Grand Master Riderfort arrived at Tyre, but
the gates were shut against them by Conrad.
·
The Pivot to
Acre (1189): King Guy,
seeking to regain his kingdom, marched to Acre with the fragments of the Templars and
Hospitalers. They began a siege that lasted nearly two years.
·
Saladin’s
Response: Saladin
surrounded the Christians who were surrounding the city. It was a "siege
within a siege."
·
The Arrival
of the Kings (1191):
This is where the "heavy hitters" arrived—Philip of France and
Richard the Lionheart. Their arrival broke the stalemate, and Acre was taken,
becoming the new headquarters for the Christians. The Christian control stretched
from Palestine to Northen Egypt.
·
Muslim
victories. By the later
part of the 13th century, the Christians were defeated one city at
time. They finally were surrounded at the city of Acre and the Templars had to
retreat to Cypress thus ending the Crusades.
· Financial Wealth accumulated by the Knights Templars. The Templars were the “bankers” of the money given by the Kings of Europe to rebuild the temples in the Holy Land. Merchants also paid the Templars to safely move money throughout the Mediterranean.
4 Claims: From Hattin to
the Fall of Acre
1. The Resilience of the Institution
over the Individual Throughout the
12th and 13th centuries, European Kings came and went, often leaving the Holy
Land in chaos. Macoy shows that while the secular "Kingdom" was often
failing, the Templars remained the one constant "Bulwark." * The
Claim: The Order was stronger than any one leader. Its military and
monastic discipline allowed it to outlast the shifting political whims of
European monarchs.
- The Insight: This is where
Macoy demonstrates the depth of his understanding, synthesized through
years of studying the Blue Lodge and Knights Templar rituals. He shows
that the system—the ritual and the standard—is what preserves the
light when the individual fails.
2. The Banking Power & The $3,000,000 Castle (Safed) Macoy highlights
the "prodigious wealth" of the Order, noting they spent between $825,000
and $3,000,000 (in 19th-century value) to restore the Castle of Safed.
While he credits "donations of the pious," he alludes to the Order
becoming a global bank for Kings and Merchants.
- The Insight: The Templars
understood that to maintain the "Standard" of protection, they
had to be the most financially organized entity in the world.
3. The Honorable Final Stand (Acre, 1291) During the loss of the last Christian possession in Palestine, the Templars didn't just retreat. They fought until their headquarters literally collapsed. Macoy notes their glory "shone with undivided light" alongside the Hospitalers during this final tragedy.
- The Insight: This sets the stage for our Part Fourth tease: Jacques de Molay was elected Grand Master shortly after this retreat to carry the "spirit" of the Order into the shadows of Europe.
4. The "Masonic Refugee" Theory & The Tease of Jacques de
Molay Macoy discusses the aftermath of 1291, where the survivors regrouped in
Cyprus.
- The Claim: He suggests
the "spirit" of the Order survived the rubble of Acre, being
carried into the shadows of Europe. This is punctuated by the election of Jacques
de Molay as Grand Master in 1293.
- The Insight: For the "Bright Mason," this explains the "Secret
History"—how a military retreat in the 13th century became the
foundation for a spiritual fraternity centuries later.
4 Combined Actions: Building Your Stronghold
1. Secure Your "Independent Stronghold" (The Department/Lodge) Just as the
defenders of Tyre refused to let a failing King surrender their city, you must
refuse to be a "cynical employee" when leadership falters.
- The Action: Focus on your
specific "department" or station. Secure your area of
responsibility—whether it is the Lodge’s finances, the meal committee, or
your professional team—so tightly that it produces results independent of
the chaos at the top.
- The Goal: Don't just
complain about a "dumb boss" or an "irresolute"
Master. Make your stronghold so efficient that it becomes a
"bulwark" for everyone else.
2. Audit Your "Building Budget" (The Capital of Time &
Money) The Templars invested millions (up to $3M in 19th-century value) to
rebuild the Castle of Safed because they knew a "Standard"
without a fortress is just a dream.
- The Action: Analyze where
you are spending your "capital." Are your resources going toward
the "body-bending toil" of meaningful work, or are they being
wasted on distractions?
The Goal: Invest heavily in the things that actually protect
your mission. If the Lodge needs a future, spend your time on education and
quality ritual, not just "keeping the lights on.”
3. Plan Your "Cyprus" Pivot & Succession When the Holy Land was lost, the Order moved to Cyprus to regroup and elected new leadership.
- The Action: If a project
has failed, don't quit the mission—just change your base of operations.
Simultaneously, identify your "Junior Deacon"—the person who has
the leadership quality to carry your work forward when your current
"Crusade" ends.

4. Build an "Endurance Mindset" (The Cyprus Pivot) Part Third covers a
century of fighting. When Acre finally fell, the survivors didn't quit; they
moved to Cyprus to regroup.
- The Action: Don't get
discouraged by a "calamitous" week or a project that collapses.
If your current "Temple" falls, perform a "Rose-Water"
reset: clean the slate, audit your "bank" of remaining skills,
and change your base of operations.
- The Goal: Stay true to the "Standard" until there is no ground left to stand on, then carry that light into the next chapter.
