Iceland. Iceland separated from Denmark in 1944 and became an independent republic with Sveinn Bjornsson as President. In 1951, there were in Iceland the following lodges under the National Grand Lodge of Denmark: at Reykjavik, a St. John’s (Craft) Lodge Edda, a St. Andrew’s Lodge Helgafell, and a Chapter working the 7th and 8th degrees; at Akureyri, a St. John’s Lodge Run and a St. Andrew’s Lodge Huld. On July 23, 1951, these bodies formed the ”Freemasonry Order of Iceland” with President Bjornsson as Grand Master and he was installed on July 25. He died the following January. There was no English-speaking Masonic lodge on the Island as of 1958.
