A Masonic family of Germany: (1) Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick--Wolfenbuettel, born 1721, died 1792. He resigned his military career in 1766 after serving some years with Frederick the Great. He was initiated in the Lodge of the Three Globes at Berlin in 1743, and became Protector of Lodge Saint Charles, Brunswick in 1764, and Past Grand Master of Brunswick in 1770, Protector of the Strict Observance in 1771, and Grand Master of Scottish Lodges in 1772. He was declared Grand Master of the several lodges assembled in 1782 at Wilhemsbad. He patronized the Illuminati and the Asiatic Brethren. (2) Frederick Augustus, Prince of Brunswick, born 1740, second son of Duke Charles I. Affiliated with the Strict Observance in 1769, and made National Grand Master of Prussia in 1772, which position he held until 1799. (3) William A., Prince of Brunswick, third son of Duke Charles I of Brunswick, joined the Lodge Saint Charles in 1769, and died in 1770. (4) Maximilian J. L., Prince of Brunswick, youngest son of Duke Charles I, joined the Lodge Saint Charles in 1770, and became its Protector.
