Broken Column.

A perfectly wrought column would represent a finished work and, hence, would symbolize a captain or leader. So, a broken column suggests the ruin or death of the work or leader. This, and other additions to the ritual which occurred about the same time, have often been attributed to Jeremy L. Cross (q.v.) but there is only surmise to support that assertion.
