Boyden Library Classification.

An adaptation of the Dewey Decimal System of Library Classification, especially for use in Masonic Libraries, perfected by William L. Boyden (q.v.). It was divided into 10 general heads as follows: M00, General works (subdivisions M01 to M09); M10, History and Philosophy (subdivisions M11 to M19); M20, Costumes and Paraphernalia; M30, Jurisprudence; M40, Charity and Education; M50, Art and Architecture; M60, Literature and Music; M70, Societies admitting only Masons; M80 Women in Masonry, Co-Masonry; M90 Negro Masonry. The Boyden Classification was found to be too limited for large Masonic libraries. As a consequence, J. Hugo Tatsch, with the assistance of Miss Lavinia Steele (Iowa Masonic Library) and Miss Muriel Davis (Massachusetts Masonic Library), both trained librarians, revised the system. This Boyden-Tatsch-Steele-Davis system of classification is used in the large Masonic libraries today.
