Description (for website or catalog use):

A rare three-volume collection (1915, 1916, 1917) of Square and Compass: A Journal of Masonry, one of the most respected American Masonic periodicals of the early 20th century. Edited by Lawrence N. Greenleaf, Past Grand Master of Colorado, the journal offered thoughtful essays, Masonic news, poetry, commentary on lodge work, and reflections on the Craft’s moral and spiritual ideals.

Each bound annual volume includes contributions from prominent Masonic writers such as Haig Adadourian (“The Everyday Mason and His Reward”) and features recurring sections including:

  • “Eastern Star Department,” edited by Sarah E. Calvert, with updates and literary pieces for O.E.S. members.

  • Lodge addresses and orations exploring ethics, brotherhood, and social responsibility in wartime America.

  • Editorial reflections from Greenleaf on patriotism and Masonic duty during World War I.

The 1917 issue bears the subtitle “The Virginia Masonic Journal”—printed from Richmond, Virginia—showing the wide Masonic distribution and influence of the periodical. Bound uniformly in cloth with gilt titles “Square and Compass” and the initials “V.M.J.” at the spine base, these volumes were likely library-bound for preservation by a Grand Lodge or Masonic library.

A historically significant set reflecting Freemasonry’s intellectual culture and moral leadership during the WWI era.
