Bonneville, Nicholas de.

A French Masonic student and book dealer, born 1760, died 1828, author of The J*suits driven from Freemasonry and their weapons broken by the Freemasons, published in 1788, which was translated into German by Johann J. C. Bode (q.v.). Bonneville also translated into French, Thomas Paine’s Essay on the Origin of Freemasonry, and was also the author of a History of Modern Europe, published in 1792. None of Bonneville’s works was of permanent value. His theory was that the J*suits (q.v.) had introduced the theme of Knight Templar dispersion into the Scottish symbolic degrees, giving the latter a r*vengeful attitude and that they had incorporated into the higher degrees four vows applicable to a J*suit. Bonneville was evidently a Girondist and was arr*sted and impr*soned as such in 1793.
