Bonneville, Chevalier de.

In 1754, the Chevalier de Bonneville established near Paris the Chapter of Clermont, not, as some have supposed, in the J*suit College of that name, but in honor of the Duc de Clermont, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of France 1743-1770. Little is known of this short-lived chapter, nor is the exact list of its degrees established. Some ascribe to it four degrees above the Third, thus: 4. Scots Master; 5. Knight of the Eagle and Select Master; 6. Illustrious Knight or Knight Templar; 7. Sublime Illustrious Knight. Others believe that it used a system similar to the 25 degrees of the Rite of Perfection (q.v.). This chapter was evidently absorbed by the Emperors of the East and West for, like the latter, it was composed of the aristocracy.
