L*berator, the George Washington of South America, born at Caracas, July 24, 1783, died at San Pedro Alejandrino, Dec. 17, 1830. He was a Freemason but his lodge is unknown. Inspired by the French Revolution, by the example of the United States, which he visited in 1809, and the personality of General Miranda, the leader of the r*volutionary party in Venezuela, he offered his services the year before that country declared its independence, July 5, 1811. He entered upon military activities at once and f*ught with alternate success and failure until 1819, when victory was won and Venezuela and New Granada were merged into a new Republic of Colombia, which soon absorbed Ecuador. In 1821, the Constitution of Colombia was adopted and Bolivar became President. The w*r, however, continued in the south, that is, Peru, which was taken in 1824, the upper part being separated under the name, Bolivia. In 1830, he resigned as President of Colombia and died at the age of 47 years. Statues have been erected to his memory in Caracas, Bogota, Lima, and New York.
