Beadle. Sometimes spelled beetle, was a setting maul. In 1726, there was published in England The Whole History of the Widow’s Son k*lled by the Blow of a Beetle. In 1830, Prichard’s Masonry Dissected was published, containing the following:
”Q. What did the Ruffians k*ll him with? A. A Setting Maul, Setting Tool and Setting Beadle.”
