Basilica. Originally a Roman church or palace, generally rectangular in plan, though the Byzantine basilicas of the Christian era were square, octagonal, or round. At first roofed by aid of wood beams, the basilica became vaulted or domed as the Romans developed the arch, the vault, and the dome. See ARCHITECTURE.
