Avignon

Avignon. A city in southern France, once the residences of the Popes and said to have been the center for production of the Hauts Grades (q.v.), particularly, Hermetic degrees, from the institution of the high degrees about 1740 to the French Revolution in 1789. The Mother Lodge at Avignon came under att*ck from the Inquis*tion in 1757 and was dissolved.
