Anoint

Anoint. To consecrate by pouring on oil; a very ancient custom, much practiced among the Hebrews. The anointing of Aaron is recounted in Exodus 29:7; and the anointing of memorial stones, in Genesis 28:18, 22; 31:13; 35:14; and the sanctifying of the Tabernacle in Exodus 30:23-29 and 40:9. The ceremony of anointing or unction, as it is sometimes called, is employed in the Order of High Priesthood, in the Thrice Illustrious Master degree, and in some of the Scottish Rite degrees.
