Anchor and Ark

Anchor and Ark. In the Preston-Webb lectures, it is said: ”The Anchor and Ark are emblems of a well grounded hope, and a well-spent life. They are emblematical of the divine ark which safely wafts us over the tempestuous sea of troubles, and that anchor which shall safely moor us in a peaceful harbor, where the wicked cease from troubling, and the weary shall find rest.” It is claimed that the anchor is the Christian symbol of hope and is found inscribed on the tombs in the Catacombs of Rome, probably originating in the words of St. Paul: ”Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast.” (Hebrews 6:19) It is also said that the Ark of Noah was a Christian symbol of the Church of Christ, floating safely amid the deluge in which all else was destroyed.
