The Effects of AI on Freemasonry

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making headlines everywhere, and it’s already changing how people learn, communicate, and work. But when it comes to Freemasonry, we must be careful. The Craft is not built on shortcuts or convenience—it’s built on tradition, discipline, and the passing of light from one Brother to another.

Preserving, Not Replacing
Why Mentorship Matters
Keeping the Craft Alive

AI can help us in useful ways. It can organize archives, preserve old publications, and make historical resources easier to find. In that sense, it can act as a tool to safeguard our history. But that is where its role should end. Freemasonry is not just words on a screen—it is lived experience, shaped by ritual, reflection, and fellowship.

Every Mason knows the importance of the mentor-to-student relationship. Ritual and lessons are passed down person to person, Brother to Brother, with patience and guidance. That connection is irreplaceable. An AI-generated summary might give you the “gist” of something, but it cannot compare to studying the ritual itself, reciting the words, and receiving counsel from a mentor who has walked the path before you.

In fact, leaning on AI for ritual study is not just discouraged—it is frowned upon. Ritual is meant to be learned the traditional way: through practice, memory, and mentorship. It is the work itself that transforms the Mason, not a quick summary or digital shortcut.

AI can make life easier in many areas, but Masonry has never been about what is easy. It is about labor, discipline, and the growth that comes from effort. If we allow technology to replace our traditions, we risk losing the very character of the Craft.

As Masons, we are called to preserve our teachings and practices for the generations that follow. That means embracing useful tools when appropriate, but never at the expense of our rituals, our traditions, or our bonds of Brotherhood.

At Macoy Publishing, we believe in using technology to support—not replace—the Craft. Books, ritual guides, and the mentor-to-student connection remain the surest way to gain true light. AI may have its place, but in Freemasonry, nothing can take the place of the human touch.
